CHENGDU, CHINA, — To boost energy efficiency and operational performance, ABB has deployed intelligent building control systems at Chengdu’s newly opened greenfield airport, set to serve over 50 million passengers annually.Officially launching on , Chengdu Tianfu International Airport emerges as a pivotal international transportation hub in Sichuan Province, playing a key role in advancing the integrated development of the Chengdu-Chongqing City Cluster. Boasting three runways and two terminals, the airport will handle all of Chengdu’s international flights. Upon full completion, it is projected to accommodate 90 million passengers and 2 million tons of cargo yearly, solidifying its status as China’s second-largest airport.

The airport’s construction adhered to core principles of "safety, green development, smart innovation, and cultural integration," with a focus on delivering top-tier passenger experiences centered on safety and comfort. To manage growing passenger and cargo volumes while meeting energy-saving and emission-reduction goals, the integration of intelligent and digital technologies was critical. As a global leader in electrification solutions, ABB was selected to provide Tianfu Airport with smart building control systems and power products, ensuring reliable electrical distribution and high energy efficiency.

James Zhao, Business Lead for ABB’s Electrification Business in China, stated, “ABB has a strong track record as a trusted partner for aviation projects worldwide. We are honored to contribute to this world-class airport initiative. By leveraging our smart building automation and reliable power distribution expertise, we’re helping Tianfu Airport operate safely and efficiently—reducing energy use, cutting emissions, and fostering sustainability.”

ABB installed its ABB i-bus® KNX intelligent building control system across Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, featuring over 19,000 switch circuits, 600 dimmers, and 4,000 sensors. This intelligent lighting system simplifies the management of terminal lighting while providing facility managers with data-driven insights to optimize performance, potentially reducing energy consumption by up to 30%.

In addition to lighting controls, the terminals are equipped with ABB’s i-HD panels, VD4 vacuum circuit breakers, Relion® 615 series feeder protection relays, and medium-voltage current/voltage transformers. To ensure stable power distribution across the airport, ABB’s ring main units (RMUs) are deployed in apron lighting systems, airfield underpasses, and EV charging stations, significantly enhancing power supply reliability. The airport’s data centers, operation command centers, and field service buildings also utilize ABB Emax 2 air circuit breakers, Tmax XT molded case circuit breakers, and contactors to maintain uninterrupted electrical operations.

ABB has a proven history of supporting major airport projects in China, including expansions and upgrades at Beijing Capital International Airport (Terminal 3), Beijing Daxing International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao and Pudong International Airports, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, and Wuhan Tianhe International Airport.
