Partnership to Accelerate Solid-State Transformer Innovation for Efficient Energy Infrastructure
ABB has announced a strategic minority investment in North Carolina-based startup DG Matrix, aiming to advance the commercialization of solid-state power electronics solutions tailored for generative AI data centers, renewable microgrids, and industrial electrification. The collaboration will focus on scaling DG Matrix’s breakthrough Power Router platform, an all-in-one system that replaces 10–20 conventional electrical devices with a single, highly efficient solution.

Revolutionizing Power Infrastructure for the AI Era

As global electricity demand surges—driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centers, smart industries, electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, and the energy transition—legacy power infrastructure is increasingly strained. DG Matrix’s Power Router addresses this challenge by integrating multiple AC and DC energy sources and loads into a single system, offering transformative benefits:
  • Size Reduction: Up to five times smaller than traditional setups, saving critical space in dense facilities like data centers.
  • Energy Efficiency: Boasts best-in-class efficiency of 98 percent, minimizing energy waste and lowering operational costs.
  • Versatility: Supports diverse applications, from optimizing AI data center power distribution to enhancing renewable microgrid resilience and industrial electrification systems.

Strategic Alignment to Drive Sustainable Innovation

“With the explosive growth of AI and the urgent need to accelerate the energy transition, customers are seeking smarter solutions to manage their increasingly complex power demands,” said Massimiliano Cifalitti, President of ABB’s Smart Power division. “DG Matrix’s solid-state power electronics technology is a game-changer—it empowers data centers to optimize AI operations more efficiently while helping industries reduce their environmental footprint. Our investment in startups like DG Matrix underscores our commitment to making electricity more intelligent and sustainable for all.”
Haroon Inam, CEO of DG Matrix, added: “Backed by a world-class team, differentiated technology, and a strong intellectual property foundation, DG Matrix is poised to disrupt multi-billion-dollar markets. ABB’s proven track record in scaling commercial innovation makes them the ideal partner to accelerate the deployment of our solutions, reshaping energy infrastructure for a more sustainable future.”

ABB’s Venture Capital Focus on Next-Gen Electrification

The minority investment in DG Matrix is led by ABB Electrification Ventures, the venture capital arm of ABB Electrification. Since its launch in 2021, ABB Electrification Ventures has invested approximately $80 million in 15 startups at the forefront of electrification innovation.
This investment aligns with ABB Ventures, the group-wide venture capital framework established in 2009. Over the past 16 years, ABB Ventures has deployed around $450 million into startups developing technologies that complement ABB’s core portfolio in electrification, robotics, automation, and motion—reinforcing the company’s commitment to driving industry transformation through strategic partnerships and cutting-edge innovation.
