ABB has joined Arctial as an investor to conduct deep-dive assessments for a pioneering sustainable aluminum smelter in Finland. This "Greentop" initiative could become Europe’s first new primary aluminum production facility in over three decades.
Arctial is examining the viability of constructing the plant in western Finland’s Kokkola and Kronoby regions, evaluating commercial, environmental, social, and technical aspects. ABB will specifically analyze electrification and automation solutions, including power conversion systems, high-voltage equipment, transformers, and substations.
Driven by soaring demand from packaging and other sectors, the project plans to leverage Finland’s renewable energy infrastructure. Local and international industrial partners are anticipated to contribute. ABB aims to enhance the operation’s energy efficiency, reliability, and safety through front-end engineering, budget planning, scheduling, and risk assessments.
Though ABB’s investment size remains confidential (agreed in Q1 2025), Arctial expects a final construction decision in 2026-2027.

This project represents a significant step toward decarbonizing Europe’s aluminum industry.
